artBLISS 2013 in Latergrams

Oh dear, I'm woefully behind on updates around here. These pics are supposed to be Instagrams. Latergrams will have to do...
On the weekend of September 27th, 28th and 29th, I traveled to the Washington D.C. area's jewelry retreat, artBLISS. When I arrived, I was greeted by the artbliss mascot. She is pretty, classy and perfectly patriotic. I'm bad with names but, I think her name is Eleanor? Excuse me, if that's not right.
Friday night was the 'Meet and Greet' event. Here I am with my friend and fellow artist, Erin Prais-Hintz of Tesori Trovati Jewelry. I'm happy to have spent some quality time with her over the weekend!

On Saturday, I took Stacie Florer's Thin Gauge Metals class. These are the earrings I made during class. I'm thrilled with them! It was so much fun. Stacie's class was everything I knew it would be and more. I really connect with Stacie on a deep personal level and a creative one. Her class was inspiring in more ways than one. I learned a lot, got tons of personal attention from Stacie even though her class was full to the max and I just enjoyed creating in the environment that she facilitates. Oh, and laughed a lot, too!  I do hope our paths continue to cross and I get to work with her again in the future. Before I took the class, I said I was participating for the experience and had no specific intention of adding metalwork to my jewelry. Now, I could actually see myself playing with the techniques I learned. Working with the thin gauge metal is beginner-friendly, forgiving and very approachable. There's lots of potential. I'm excited about the possibilities!

Saturday evening was the 'Soiree' event of shopping and socializing! Here I am at my vendor table. I sold copies of my book, Bohemian-Inspired Jewelry, kits, and an array of my favorite jewelry-making materials, beads and findings from Ornamentea.com. I also demonstrated one of my favorite projects from Bohemian-Inspired Jewelry, my Leather Ruffle Hoop earrings.

Another treat was getting to see my friend, Tracy Statler of Make Bracelets! She also had a table at the soiree selling some of her stash. And oh, how I loved her stash! I did some shopping with her but, I would have loved to take that whole table home! Too bad my suitcase was already overweight. Tracy makes the coolest jewelry and she contributed some of her awesome designs to Bohemian-Inspired Jewelry. Tracy is a sot-after designer. She recently added Cindy Wimmer's new book, The Missing Link to her book contributions.

Speaking of The Missing Link book, here it is! ArtBLISS co-creator, Cindy Wimmer just authored her own wire jewelry book called The Missing Link: From Basic to Beautiful Wirework Jewelry. Fortunately, her author copies arrived just in time for her artBLISS retreat and she was able to have a book signing! WhooHoo! It just wouldn't have been the same without it. Having Cindy's book there and being able to get a signed copy straight from her was a highlight for me and it made artBLISS this year that much more exciting.

Here's Cindy signing copies surrounded by the fabulous jewelry from the book. Well, it's about time this talented jewelry artist authored her own book showcasing her incredible work. I've thought this for some time. I have to say it was well worth the wait. This is one of the best wire technique books I've seen in a long time. The wire links themselves are the stars here. The link designs are beautiful, original and highly adaptable. The step-by-step photos and instructions are thorough, detailed and well-executed. Even a beginner could follow along and make the wire links with these excellent photos and directions. One of the things I love the most is the gorgeous photography and styling. The photos do justice to Cindy's exquisite work and that of her contributing designers. The style of the photos shine with Cindy's personal touch and aesthetic with her own vintage props used for backgrounds. It's a gorgeous book and I'm thrilled I came home from artBLISS with my own author-signed copy!

Learn To Make Leather Links For Jewelry

Leather in accessories is hot, hot, hot! I think I've said this before, but it's worth repeating. If you want to make chic jewelry that's in demand now, consider incorporating some leather into your designs. Leather is a wonderful material to work with and it adds texture and interest to your jewelry. My stylish friend and book contributor, Tracy Statler is currently offering a video tutorial on how to make these fun leather infinity links. These components are a versatile way to add leather to your jewelry. Incorporate them into bracelets, necklaces and even earrings.

In this video tutorial, Tracy takes you step-by-step through the process of creating her innovative beaded leather infinity links. She also provides you with a handy supply list and helpful tips and tricks to make creating these cool components much easier.  Tracy is available for questions and support, if you need it. She does allow designers to sell jewelry that is created from her tutorial, which in my book is a huge plus and very generous! There's even an option to pin and share your designs on a Pinterest gallery board that Tracy has created specially for those that purchase her tutorial. That's a great way to connect, share and promote your jewelry!
You can purchase Tracy's video tutorial through her blog, Make Bracelets! I highly recommend that you check it out.

Oh, and as if you needed any more eye candy or convincing, below are more examples of Tracy's work showing the versatility of her leather technique. If there are any designers to keep your eye on, it's this girl. She's a phenomenal, high-quality fashion jewelry designer that enjoys sharing professional tips and tricks, knowledge and supply resources, teaching and writing jewelry-making tutorials and how-tos. What more could you possibly ask for? Do your- jewelry-making-self good and join her on her blog here.

I hope you enjoy her inspiration. I know I do!

Wellness Words Jewelry REVEAL!

Today, my friend, Tracy Statler, is hosting a jewelry-making challenge over on her blog, Make Bracelets! The challenge is called, Inspire Change: Wellness Words Jewelry. The idea is to choose a positive word, phrase or mantra that you want to incorporate into your life and create a piece of jewelry around it. I love this idea and I love the trend of inspirational jewelry that hold meaningful messages. Tracy calls it "healthy" jewelry and I couldn't agree more! Messages in jewelry help us to be mindful. When we are mindful, we are more self-aware. When we are self-aware, we are in alignment with our true self. When we are in alignment with ourselves, we are in a state of well-being. So, yes. "Healthy" is very appropriate!

Many folks choose a word at the beginning of the new year to use as a guide, a mantra to help them achieve a goal, a dream or simply bring positive energy into their lives for the coming year. I have not intentionally committed to doing this in the past. However, this year, a word and a phrase chose me. I wasn't particularly seeking out a word, but when this thought came to mind, it resonated with me and I felt strongly about it at the time.

My word is:
EXPAND
as in
'Expand your horizons.'

I'm extremely excited to show you the jewelry I created from my inspiration word and phrase:
 Expand Your Horizons Necklace
My necklace design features some of my most favorite materials. I braided a cord for my necklace with Irish waxed linen along with Hill Tribe silver beads, tiny carnelian gemstones and ties of silk ribbon.
Custom-made pendant by Tesori Trovati on Etsy.
I enlisted the help of artist Erin Prais-Hintz of Tesori Trovati(Treasures Found) to make me a custom pendant with my phrase, 'Expand your horizons.' Erin makes a collection of pendants she calls 'Simple Truths'. Her pendants are right in line with the concept of this challenge. I knew she'd be a perfect choice for what I was looking for. Actually, Erin and I have quite the serendipitous relationship. It's very interesting how this particular pendant came to be. Long story short, the pendant above was a gift to me from Erin because of this happening. Honestly, I didn't 'do' much, even if you consider posting a link on Facebook doing anything. No, really, Erin brought it all upon herself to achieve her success. I think it is so incredibly cool how her journey with her 'Simple Truths' line of pendants has come full circle in such a fantastic way. It tickles me silly to think that somehow I was a tiny piece of the puzzle that brought it all together for her. The universe works in amazingly beautiful ways. It makes me smile and I will gladly accept this token of appreciation and gratitude on the Universe's behalf. :) Thank you, Erin. This pendant has great and deep meaning for BOTH of us and that makes it even more special to me.
 EXPAND Bracelet Set

I also made myself a set of stackable, adjustable leather bracelets. Made with Greek leather and wraps of Irish waxed linen cord for pops of color and texture. Each bracelet is adorned with an individual letter that spells out my word EXPAND when stacked together!!! How cool is that?!? This idea could be used to spell out any word or name. You could even swap out the letters from time to time to spell out new words to suit your mood. Love this idea. All materials for the set of leather bracelets from Ornamentea.com. These could possibly be a new Ornamentea tutorial coming soon! Stay tuned for that.

I hope you enjoyed my wellness word jewelry. Thanks for joining me today. A BIG thank you to our challenge host, my friend, Tracy Statler for this inspiration and opportunity to explore and express our words in jewelry! Please visit Tracy's blog. Wrapped, Stacked & Layered Bracelet Challenge

Welcome to the Wrapped, Stacked and Layered Bracelet Challenge hosted by Tracy Statler. This is such a fun idea. So chic and on trend! I just love it when fashion trends and handmade jewelry mix together. You can certainly count on Tracy to deliver stylish jewelry and ideas. I had a blast making my bracelets and putting them together. I played around with  several different combinations of my handmade bracelets. Ultimately, I decided on this collection of 5 here. You can view a few of my alternative bracelet stacks on my Flickr page.

I created all 5 of the bracelets shown here. The two on each end are adjustable slide knot bracelets. I made them with waxed cotton cord, cornerless metal cubes and ceramic rounds by artist Elaine Ray. You can find my FREE TUTORIAL on how to make them on the Art Bead Scene blog right here.

The three bracelets in the middle, are made with my favorite stringing material, Irish waxed linen cord and metal cornerless cubes in copper, silver and brass...these beads are other favorite! I used colorful waxed linen cord in purple, orange and fuchsia. The purple and orange linen bracelets were both created using a macrame square knot. The fuchsia bracelet is simply braided.

I love the colorful combination in my bracelet ensemble. I'm seeing lots of bright, bold colors for clothes this Spring/Summer season. I love putting outfits together with my jewelry and since the bracelet trend is all about fashion and style, I thought I'd put together something fun to wear with my bracelets. I'm all set for Summer!
 color-block dress, wedge sandals

I hope you enjoyed my bracelet collection and outfit. Now, hop around and get an eyeful of arm candy from this list of participants:
